Abstract/Contents:Profiles the sward at Highgrove in Gloucestershire, England, the home of Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall. States that "the sward contains a huge diversity of plant species including 'weeds', which are taken in hand and converted into a lawn." Explains that "foreign to all the usual principles of groundsmanship, moss [at Highgrove] is not controlled in any way and the turf is never watered." Also explains that "considerable visitor numbers mean some parts of the paths and lawns do get damaged...if there is extensive damage, usually in more shaded areas, the grass is replaced by a hard hoggin path." Describes how the meadow is managed, stating that "the management programme [program] starts in early July when the meadow is cut for hay or silage by a harvester...in October, the area is mown with a ride-on rotary mower to simulate grazing...in December and January temporary fencing is installed and tree guards fitted - then the meadow is grazed closely by sheep... the animals' feet bring the wildflower seeds to the surface and these seeds start to germinate in March." Describes how "conserved green waste is used to create compost for the gardens" and explains that "the compost is graded according to the application and mixed to suit plant species." Concludes that "one of the advantages of an organic farm is that it is teeming with wildlife and insects, some of which have not been seen previously for many years."
