Abstract/Contents:Discusses the root growth cycle of turfgrass, stating that "cool-season turfgrasses exhibit a distinct bimodal pattern of root." Also discusses the factors that control nutrient uptake by the roots. States that "root growth requires energy and carbon compounds - both of which are derived from sugars that are translocated to roots from leaf photosynthetic production." Explains that "nutrient availability in soils is also influenced by the seasonal cycle" and presents several possible nutrient management strategies for cool- and warm-season grasses. Concludes that "turf fertilization in the spring and at any time is largely a matter of common sense."
