| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses a lack of research concerning disease resistant bentgrass varieties. Briefly profiles the development history of bentgrass varieties. States that there has been "additional emphasis on management characteristics such as wear tolerance, thatch accumulation, rooting behavior, frost tolerance, heat tolerance, Poa annua invasion, fall aerification recovery, tolerance to recycled water and disease resistance." Mentions two types of disease resistance: horizontal, "where a number of different genes control the traits of interest"; and vertical, "controlled by one or two genes." Discusses factors to consider when selecting a bentgrass cultivar, including its intended use, and recommends one "understand the major disease problems in...[the] area." Concludes that "the use of the cultivars should enable all...other disease management practices to work more effectively, where it will be an important component of a sustainable turf management program." |
