States that "although the roots of turfgrass pathology can be traced to Europe as far back as the 16th century, it is the late 1800s that cleary mark the beginnings of turfgrass pathology." Discusses factors that have been influential to the direction of the research, stating that "perhaps the most important factor has been the popularity of the game of golf." Details the major developments in turfgrass pathology throughout the years, noting a major change in the 1980s from "chemical evaluation programs to more of an emphasis on pathogen biology, pathogen ecology, and disease epidemiology." Notes various developments in pathogen biology, biological disease control, pathogen detection, and transgenic plants and host plant resistance. Concludes that the "greatest need in turfgrass pathology is to understand how to sustain turfgrass systems with a minimum of external inputs." |
