| Abstract/Contents: | "The complete mobile hypobaric system includes three series-interconnected (quick coupled) components: the gas source(s), the control unit, and the treatment chamber. The gas source consists of one-to-three pressure-regulated gas cylinders. The control unit consists of a) gas metering and mixing flowmeteres which permit the intermixing of up to three different gas sources, b) vacuum regulator and metering value for pressure and flow control, and c) two distinct-function vacuum pumps installed in parallel and selected by a flow-directing valve. A liquid-ring pump is employed with experiments involving hazardous gas mixtures (e.g. high 02) and/or very high relative humidity conditions. An oil-seal pump is employed for all other situations. The treatment chamber is constructed of transparent polycarbonate (Lexan) and can be located remote to the control unit by up to 25 ft. A humidifier can be quick coupled into the system as needed. The overall system can be widely applied in teaching and research. Stress ethylene-related leaf senesciene studies serve to demonstrate the system." |
