| Abstract/Contents: | Details the evolution of bentgrass breeding from the early 1900s. States that until the development of the seeded cultivar Pencross in 1954, C-series bentgrass, which "maintained uniform putting surfaces but had to be established vegetatively," was the standard. Explains that improved golfing equipment resulted in the need for improved cultivars and accelerated breeding efforts resulted in the development of new cultivars. Details the characteristics of Colonial bentgrass and Velvet bentgrass which were developed in the 1990s. States that "bentgrass breeders typically use a breeding method called population improvement and recurrent selection to develop improved bentgrass cultivars." Details the development of bentgrass cultivars with improved disease resistance. |
