Abstract/Contents:There are many factors involved in the wear and maintenance of athletic fields. A common construction mistake falls in the area of construction and establishment of turf. Organic topdressings or the use of field grown sod to establish turf on the field can result in surface sealing which causes compaction and drainage problems. Common maintenance problems include: neglect in the off-season, over irrigation and/or nitrogen fertilization during summer months, failure to overseed regularly, failure to core regularly, and failure to dethatch on a timely basis. Many athletic field maintenance crews are unfamiliar with proper maintenance for sand based fields. Wear problems occur when field use is concentrated in one area, such as the center of the field, or simply too often to allow the turf to recooperate between games and/or practices. Proper maintenance practices and common sense in field usage will reduce many problems.
