Abstract/Contents: | Describes the "three main causes of irrigation leaks," including "poor irrigation installations"; "inadequately maintained or abused irrigation systems"; and "poorly tuned/performing pump stations." Suggests the use of a variable speed pump, stating that "a variable speed drive (also known, more correctly as a Variable Frequency Drive or VFD), modulates the speed of the pump, ramping it up or down to maintain a specific pressure setting." Discusses the costs associated with an upgraded irrigation system. States that "generally, a VFD upgrade will save [superintendents] 25 to 35 percent on hydro depending on how poorly tuned [the] old pump station was." |
