| Abstract/Contents: | Profiles the black turfgrass ataenius (BTA) Ataenius spretulus. Highlights BTA characteristics and discusses the biology of the beetle, stating that "adult beetles overwinter in wooded sites near the golf course." States that "BTA feeds principally on golf course turf, appearing most commonly on fairways and tees, with an occasionally [occasional] problem on greens." Discusses potential control methods of BTA, including the use of natural predators, stating that "it is believed that turf pests are held in check by natural insect enemies are not disturbed by abundant chemical applications." Also discusses the use of insecticides to control BTA. Concludes that "although the black turfgrass ataenius is an enigma, research will continue to piece the BTA puzzle together to aid superintendents in combating this turfgrass pest." |
