| Abstract/Contents: | States that "productivity of the forest plant community is a consequence of the interaction of tree shoots and roots with the environment. One of the most important, and perhaps the least understood, zones of biological interaction is the soil immediately surrounding the root - the rhizosphere." Suggests that "protecting or restoring the diversity of rhizosphere microorganisms through proper management practices is essential to maintenance of ecosystem health and resiliency." Discusses soil-plant relationships and mycorrhizal fungi as a key soil organism. Also discusses mycorrhizal diversity and dynamics. Concludes that "the biological diversity of natural forests and plantations is a product of the varied and often complex interactions both above and below ground level which develop through mutually beneficial associations." |
