| Abstract/Contents: | "Vegetatively-propagated Kentucky bluegrass plants (Poa pratensis 'Merion') were used to test the effects of systemic infection by Ustilago Striiformis (Stripe smut) or Urocystis agropyri (Flag smut) on various growth parameters of the host. Infection by Ustilago Striiformis significantly increased total biomass, leaf blade length, leaf area, and leaf weight of stripe-smutted plants, but significantly reduced leaf width, root weight, and root/shoot ratios. Infection by Urocystis agropyri significantly reduced all growth parameters of flag-smutted plants compared to healthy controls including: total biomass, leaf blade length, leaf width, leaf area, root weight, and root/shoot ratios." |
