| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses turfgrass disease research at conducted at Iowa State University. States that "even though highly sophisticated aresenals of chemicals are available to attack pathogens responsible for diseases, the turf specialist is often perplexed by the sudden development of the disease." Presents studies "focused on two aspects of culture and infection. Part of the stduies focuses on the influence of fertilization practices on the physiology of the plant and subsequent severity of disease development. The second part of the studies is designed to determine the potential involvement of herbicides on infection and disease development in grasses." Also discusses other infection studies regarding "roots, seeds, and the aging process in grasses." States that "a portion of the research program [at Iowa State University] is devoted to organisms that are often associated with disease problems, but which are rarely capable of causing the disease alone." Mentions that "the research program has been involved with an ongoing study of leaf smuts (stripe and flag smuts) for several years." |
