Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the potential advantages and disadvantages of topdressing use, explaining that "the most severe problem in the use of straight sand is its lack of moisture holding capacity." Recommends the use of a "root zone soil mixture...developed by extensive research by the USGA [United States Golf Association] Greens Section." Details the properties of the soil mixture, stating that "the soil should have a total pore space between 40 and 55 percent at a tension of 40 centimeters of water." Concludes that "as golf continues to increase in popularity, compaction will continue to be of primary importance in the root zone mix." |
