Abstract/Contents:Profiles the turfgrass crown, stating that "the primary growing points (meristems) are located in the crown which means all grass organs originate from the crown. Most of the energy reserves of a turfgrass plant are stored in its crown." Also states that "secondary stems can emerge from nodal buds on the crown and contribute enormously to the ability of a grass plant to produce a thick stand and spread vegetatively. These secondary stems include tillers, rhizomes and stolons." Discusses rhizome and stolon growth and the flowering hormone. Explains that "the photoperiodic signal is perceived by the leaves, where it triggers the synthesis of a flowering stimulus. This 'flowering hormone' is translocated via the phloem to the shoot apex where it induces flowering." Discusses the functions of the turf crown, including energy storage. Also discusses management factors to consider when preserving turfgrass crowns, including mowing, fertilizer management, and water management. Concludes that "crowns may not be visible but maintaining their health is an essential objective of effective turfgrass management."
