States that Vargas is "widely recognized as one of the country's premier experts on turf diseases, primarily in cool-season grasses." Describes Vargas' research, stating that "in the 1970s, he released breakthrough findings that claimed annual bluegrass did not die as a result of high temperatures in northern climates, but rather from anthracnose and summer patch." Mentions that "Vargas joined the MSU [Michigan State University] staff in 1968 after earning a doctoral degree from the University of Minnesota.
