| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses efforts that may help improve the golf course superintendent's professionalism. States that "although seminars that are designed to help superintendents improve their communication skills typically receive high ratings from attendees, they are not the first to fill up. Many superintendents look upon leadership and communication training as a necessary evil: They know they need it, but do not always want it." Suggests that "understanding the potential influence [a superintendent] can have in educating golfers can reduce overall stress levels during the [golf] season." Mentions Johnny Miller, television golf commentator, stating that "rather than [using] his rhetoric to inform the golfer about meaningful aspects of how conditions influence play, he is stuck 'down grain.'" Concludes that no turf professional "probably ever will have the influence over golfers that Miller has, but...[superintendents] have more opportunities at [their] disposal than [they] take advantage of. [Superintendents] need to take advantage of developing the skills necessary to maximize these opportunities." |
