| Abstract/Contents: | Announces that "early in 2002, James Beard, Ph.D., internationally known turfgrass scientist...together with his wife, Harriet, offered Ohio State's Turfgrass Education Program a pledge of $100,000 to establish a graduate fellowship in turfgrass physiology/biochemistry." Profiles Dr. Beard, highlighting his career and educational achievements. States that "Beard is president and chief scientist of the International Sports Turf Institute Inc., professor emeritus of turfgrass science at Texas A&M University, and teacher, mentor, research scientist, worldwide consultant and internationally recognized leader in turfgrass science." Also states that Beard is "the 1993 GCSAA [Golf Course Superintendents Association of America] Distinguished Service award winner...[and] the author of 257 scientific papers, 382 popular articles, and in collaboration with Harriet, has authored five books and a laboratory manual." Explains that "the Beards' intention was to establish, in perpetuity, a fellowship fund whose interest would pay the stipend and fees for a graduate student to study how turfgrass plants respond to stresses induced by many environmental factors." |
