Abstract/Contents:Presents a study conducted to examine "the phytotoxic effect of DEET [diethyl-m-toluamide] on bentgrass cultivars." Describes the materials and methods used in the study, stating that "turf samples were obtained from the Prairie Turfgrass Research Centre (PTRC) at Olds College in Olds, [Alberta, Canada]. The sample consisted of 101-mm [millimeters] (4-in. [inches]) diameter plugs of turfgrass pulled from a USGA [Unites States Golf Association]-specified rootzone to a depth of 203 mm (8 in.). The plugs consisted of bentgrass (Agrostis plaustris), a common cool season turfgrass found in Canada and the northern United States." Reports that "DEET in insect repellents does indeed cause phytotoxicity in turf and this can occur with even the smallest concentrations (4.95 per cent), such as those found in kids' insect repellents ("Off! Skintastic for Kids")." Concludes that "with a better understanding of the effects DEET has on turfgrass, further research can be done on the reasons behind these high phytotoxicty percentages with the goal of eliminating the problem."
