Abstract/Contents:Profiles several turfgrass root diseases. States that "the most common root diseases seen on cool season golf course turf include pythium root dysfunction (Pythium spp.), take-all patch (Gaeumannomyces graminis), necrotic ring spot (Ophiosphaerella korrae), summer patch (Magnoaporthe poae) and plant-parastic nematodes (various genera and species)." Suggests that superintendents first make a diagnosis of the disease by inspecting "the plant for specific symptoms, making sure to choose samples located on the border between healthy and symptomatic turf, as plants in the middle of the affected area may be too far gone to detect specific symptoms." Mentions that "coming out of winter, the two most common root diseases are pythium root dysfunction and take-all patch. Both become active in cool, wet weather and when the plants come out of dormancy and begin actively growing, the stage is set for infection." Concludes that there are "many factors influencing disease and symptom development, [and] it is often difficult to make a definitive diagnosis."
