Abstract/Contents:Reviews "methods to select the best cricket soils and the use of core sampling to check the quality of the pitch preparation/rolling programme [program]." States that "the performance of cricket pitches is very strongly influenced by soil texture (the proportion of clay, silt and sand), by clay mineralogy and by the organic matter content of the soil." Discusses assessment of pitch preparation, soil compaction, and soil moisture content. States that "knowledge of soil texture and organic matter content allows [one] to calculate optimum values of bulk density and soil moisture content as targets for pitch preparation." Briefly discusses organic matter, stating that "results from a soil coring programme [program] may also give an indication of excessive organic matter accumulation in the surface layer." Concludes that "selection of the wrong materials for the construction of cricket squares, or the use of the wrong top dressing, can have long-term effects on the quality of pitches and costly implications in terms of management."
