Abstract/Contents:Discusses the possible effects of phosphorus (P) fertilization on the environment. States that "although continuous use of these fertilizers has benefited turf health, many Virginia soils now have P levels far above the levels neccessary for adequate turfgrass nutrition. Unfortunately, phosphorus is most often the nutrient responsible for eutrophication (or algal blooms) that can occur in fresh-water systems...impairing the ability of these waters to support aquatic life and...recreational activities." Explains that "only voluntary programs have been (or are) in development to restrict potential P-loading from turf areas." States that "even though P moves much less readily into fresh water, only a small amount can have a large impact on water quality." Recommends taking a soil test and provides a scale indicating pollution potential. Suggests the detailed best management practices (BMPs) for dealing with phosphorus issues.
