Abstract/Contents:Discusses research regarding the levels and effects of nitrogen (N) leaching from turfgrasses. Results indicated that "the strategy of maintaining a buffer next to the stream does work to reduce nitrate loading at a very sensitive location in the ecosystem." States that seasonal patterns "suggest that winter overseeding helps reduce nitrate concentrations, even though more fertilizer is used on overseeded turf." Reports that "the golf course was not a significant contributor of nitrates to the surface water" and "properly managed turf is an excellent filter for removing nitrate from the soil and keeping it out of streams."
