Abstract/Contents:Discusses fertilizer, stating that "fertiliser [fertilizer] is, in its purest form, dung...[fertilizers] are compounds that promote plant growth and are taken up by the plant through either roots or leaf." States that "while fertilisers [fertilizers] are often a useful tool for occasional use, they are not a 'magic bullet' that can cure all ills." Suggests that organic fertilizers have several benefits and disadvantages including that "moisture in the soil is retained more efficiently", yet "the nutrients are less intense than with an inorganic fertiliser [fertilizer]." States that "there are classic problems associated with the application of chemical fertilisers [fertilizers] - surface runoff (mostly of phosphorus) and leaching into groundwater (mostly nitrates)." Discusses macronutrients and micronutrients; nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium; terrorism; and organic fertilizers. Concludes that "it is important to remember that excessive use of fertiliser [fertilizer] will definitely help one species of grass - poa annua (annual meadow grass) and that is not often a good thing."
