Abstract/Contents:Announces that "the U.S. [United States] Department of Agriculture [USDA] failed to conduct an adequate review of a proposal to plant an experimental plot of a genetically engineered turfgrass." Suggests that "the USDA should have given more scrutiny to the request made by Scotts-Miracle Gro to plant more than 400 acres of creeping bentgrass genetically altered to resist the Roundup herbicide at an Oregon test site." Explains that "the pollen from the genetically engineered grass spread from experimental plots in Oregon and bred with conventional plants." Concludes that Judge Henry Kennedy "ordered the USDA to more closely examine such applications to determine if a detailed environmental impact report is needed. The decision is not expected to have a direct impact on the Scotts-Miracle Gro request to allow the turfgrass to be sold commercially."
