Abstract/Contents:Cites a herbicide ban as the cause of potholes and overgrown weeds in Santa Cruz, California. States that in 2005, "the Santa Cruz City Council placed a moratorium on the use of herbicide by county workers...The county's Public Works Department reported it doesn't have the money or the equipment to mow the blackberry, poison oak and scotch broom sprouting along the 600 miles of public road in the unicorporated county." Reports that "Public Works officials would return by May [2007] with a request to use quicker, more comprehensive herbicides to get the job done." Mentions that the moratorium was sponsored "to protect drinking water, children and salamanders, among other things, that might be threatened by chemicals." Also mentions that "to handle out-of-control weeds, Public Works is researching...mowers that can work faster, and has discussed with vendors the need to develop organic herbicides."
