Abstract/Contents:"Fungicides were evaluated for preventative control of dollar spot. This trial was conducted at the Lake Wheeler Turfgrass Field Laboratory in Raleigh, NC on 'Penncross' creeping bentgrass maintained under putting green conditions. Mowing was performed five times weekly at a height of 0.160 in. (until 29 Jun) and 0.175 (after 29 Jun). Clippings were collected and the site was irrigated to prevent drought stress. Fertilizer was applied as 19-5-19 on 1 Mar (0.5 lb N/1000 sq ft), 18-3-16 on 20 Mar (0.5 lb N/1000 sq ft), 18-3-6 on 6 Apr (0.24 lb N/1000 sq ft), and 25-6-12 on 16 Jun (1.0 lb N/1000 sq ft). Micro-nutrients were applied as Brexil Multi (3.0 oz/1000 sq ft) on 14 Feb, 27 Mar, 24 May and HEP 35 (4.0 oz/1000 sq ft) on 6 Apr and 29 Jun. Insect pests were suppressed with Allectus G (2.9 lb/1000 sq ft) and Scimitar (8.0 fl oz/A) on 1 May and 11 Jul, respectively. ProStar + Cascade Plus (2.2 oz + 4.0 fl oz/1000 sq ft) was applied on 6 Mar, 14 Apr, and 7 Jun for suppression of fairy ring. Cascade Plus (8.0 fl oz/1000 sq ft) was applied on 30 Mar and 4 May to improve water infiltration. Plots were 3.33 ft x 5 ft and were arranged in a randomized complete block with four replications. Fungicides were applied in water equivalent to 2 gal per 1000 sq ft with a CO2 powered sprayer at 40 psi using TeeJet 8004 nozzles. All treatments were initiated on 2 May, unless otherwise noted in the table. Fungicides were reapplied at the appropriate intervals as indicated in the table. The experimental area was inoculated on 24 Apr using rye grain infested with S. homoeocarpa isolates RE-18G-35, RE-18G-4, and LWC-5, which have been confirmed as benzimidazole resistant in vitro. Dollar spot incidence was assessed on 15 May, 6, 13, 19, and 26 Jun, and 5 and 10 Jul by counting the number of infection centers per plot. Turfgrass quality was evaluated on 6 Jun, using a 1 to 9 scale (9=best, 5=acceptable) based on color, density, and uniformity. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and means separation by Waller-Duncan k-ratio t-test (k=100). Dollar spot activity was first observed in the experimental area on 15 May, approximately 2 weeks after the initiation of fungicide treatments. All treatments provided excellent control of dollar spot on all rating dates, with the exception of 3336 Plus. The poor efficacy of 3336 Plus in this trial is attributed to our inoculation with benzimidazole-resistant strains of S. homoeocarpa. Significant differences in turfgrass quality were documented on 6 Jun due to dollar spot activity, reduced turf density, and algae invasion. Most treatments provided a significant increase in turf quality, except for 26/36, 3336 Plus, and Emerald. Treatments of 3336 Plus + CL-EXP-8, CL-EXP-8, and Daconil Weatherstik resulted in the best turfgrass quality in this trial."
