Abstract/Contents:"Collections of turfgrass clippings in metropolitan areas account for a significant manpower and equipment cost as well as increased burden on local landfill sites. A turfgrass clippings management program called the Waste Saver Lawn Care Plan was initiated to eliminate the need for clippings disposal. Raleigh St. Augustinegrass plots receiving 48.9 kg N/ha at 4 or 6 wk intervals were subjected to three types of mowing to determine their influence on weeds and common diseases during June to Oct 1984 and 1985. Plots were mowed once or twice weekly at 3.5 cm using a mulching power or standard rotary mower with clippings either bagged or left standing. Broadleaf weed populations were lower on plots with clippings removed; however damaging disease activity was not observed with any of the clippings management programs. A mulching lawnmower was more effective for recycling clippings without weed or disease problems."
