Abstract/Contents:"Insecticides were evaluated for control of chinch bugs on a buffalograss research area at the University of Nebraska Agricultural Research and Development Center near Mead, NE. The turf (100% buffalograss) was maintained at a ht of 3.0 inches. Thatch accumulation in the plot area was 0.25 inch. Field conditions at the site were: soil type, silty clay loam; soil organic matter, 3-5%; soil pH, 6-7; water pH, 7.0. Environmental conditions at the time of treatment were as follows: soil moisture 14.9 %, air temp 79°F, soil temp 71°F; relative humidity 63%, wind velocity 4 mph. Plots were 5 ^D#x 5 ft and the experimental design was a RCB with four replications. Insecticides were applied on 7 Jun. Liquid products were applied using a CO2 sprayer at 40 psi and applying 131 gpa finished spray. Granule insecticides were applied using a hand shaker. Post-treatment irrigation was 0.15 inch. A total of 5.85 inches of rain accumulated during the post-treatment period. Treatments were evaluated for efficacy 1 DAT, 7 DAT, 63 DAT and 84 DAT (8, 14 Jun, 9 and 30 Aug) by vacuuming from each plot two 8-inch diameter areas (0.7 ft2 total area per plot). Samples were placed in Berlese funnels for 48 hr and surviving chinch bugs were collected in ethanol then counted. Data were subjected to ANOVA and means were separated using LSD (P ≤ 0.05). At 1 DAT, all treatments provided statistically significant reductions in CB numbers when compared to the untreated check (Table 1). All formulations of Allectus and Talstar rapidly provided excellent (≥ 95%) control of chinch bugs. However, Merit 2 F, Merit G and the experimental formulation did not provide acceptable (> 80%) chinch bug control. By 7 DAT, all treatments provided statistically significant reductions in CB numbers when compared to the untreated check (Table 2). However, Merit G did not provide acceptable (≥ 80%) CB control. At 63 DAT, all treatments provided statistically significant reductions in second generation CB when compared to the untreated check (Table 3). All formulations of Allectus and Talstar maintained excellent (≥ 96%) residual control of CB. However, Merit 2, Merit G and the experimental formulation did not provide sufficient residual activity for acceptable (> 80%) CB control. All treatments, except for the two formulations of Merit, provided statistically significant reductions in second generation CB numbers when compared to the untreated check at 84 DAT (Table 4). All formulations of Allectus and Talstar continued to provide excellent (≥ 95%) residual control of CB. However, Merit 2, Merit G and the experimental formulation failed to provide acceptable (> 80%) CB control."
