Abstract/Contents:"Insecticides were evaluated for control of Southern Masked Chafer (SMC) larvae on a Kentucky bluegrass research area at the University of Nebraska Agricultural Research and Development Center near Mead, NE. The turf (100% Kentucky bluegrass) was maintained at a height of 2.5 inches. Thatch accumulation (finger compressed) in the plot area was 0.5 inches. Field conditions at the site were: soil type, silty clay loam; soil organic matter, 3-5%; soil pH, 6.2-6.6; water pH, 7.0. Environmental conditions at the time of treatment were as follows: soil moisture 18%, air temperature 83°F, soil temperature 74°F; relative humidity 60%, wind velocity 9 mph. Plots were 5 ^D#x 5 ft and the experimental design was a RCB with three replications. Insecticides were applied on 28 Jun. Liquid products were applied using a CO2 sprayer at 40 psi and applying 131 gpa finished spray. Granule insecticides were applied using a hand shaker. Post-treatment irrigation was 0.25 inches. A total of 6.13 inches of rain accumulated during the posttreatment period. Treatments were evaluated 84 DAT (20 Sep) by removing from each plot three, 8-inch-diam turfsoil cores (1.05 ft2 total area) to a depth of 3 inch and counting the number of surviving grubs. Data were subjected to ANOVA and means were separated using LSD (P ≤ 0.05). All treatments provided statistically significant reductions of southern masked chafers when compared to the untreated control. We did not encounter any application problems with any of the formulations tested. No phytotoxicity was observed."
