Abstract/Contents: | In spring 1979, Aceria tulipae (Keifer), a species of eriophyid mite hitherto unknown outdoors in Britain, was found occurring naturally and abundantly on Lolium perenne and L. multiflorum around Aberystwyth, Dyfed, Wales. Infested plants exhibited leaf curling and the 'trapped leaf syndrome', which often accompany mite-feeding. A. tulipae is widespread in the USA where it is known to ba a vector of wheat streak mosaic virus and the causal agent of wheat spot mosaic, diseases not known to occur in Britain. Other hosts of A. tulipae include tulip and onion bulbs, and in 1980 an infestation was recorded on stored onion sets in northern England. |
