Abstract/Contents:"This study was undertaken to determine the effectiveness of Dylox 6.2G to curatively suppress a predominant Japanese beetle (JB) white grub population on a golf course rough maintained in Mifflin County, PA. The turfgrass area consisted of rough bluegrass (60%), perennial ryegrass (20%), and fine fescue (20%). Treatment plots, 6 ^D#x 8 ft, were arranged in a RCB and replicated three times. The granular formulation was applied with a hand-held shaker and mixed with fine top dressing sand to facilitate product distribution. Treatments were applied in the mid morning on 24 Aug under clear skies. Air temp was 81°F and RH = 46.3%. Soil was dry and temp at l and 2 inch depth = 66 and 64°F, respectively. General soil conditions were as follows: soil textural class, sandy loam; soil particle size analysis: sand, 54.4%; silt, 38.9%; clay, 6.7%; soil percent water content (percent by wt), 12.8; organic matter, 3.6%; CEC, 7.8; and soil pH, 4.8. Thatch, 0.125 inch thick, was dry. The area was irrigated with 0.25 inch of water (pH = 7.0) immediately after treatment. The experimental area was maintained at a mowing ht of 2.0 inches. Three 1 ft2 soil samples were removed from each replicate on 1 Oct and the total no. from all three samples of Japanese beetle (JB) and Northern masked chafer (NMC) grubs was recorded. Data was analyzed using LSD. Minimal rainfall was recorded from 12 Jul through 6 Oct. Although the golf course superintendent placed the research area on a twice weekly irrigation schedule, severe drought conditions and water use restrictions negatively impacted the development of all grub species. Data was analyzed using Waller-Duncan k ratio (WD; P ≤ 0.05). The area selected for the experiment had been infested with a natural population of NMC and predominantly JB grubs since 2004. Pre-treatment counts recorded on 18 Aug averaged 13.4 first instar JB grubs/ft2. Adult NMC flight was monitored in 2005 with a black light trap maintained at the Valentine Turfgrass Research Center. The first adult NMC was collected on 24 Jun. Adult NMC flight peaked between 2 and 8 Jul, and the last adult was collected on 28 Jul. JB adults were observed flying late this season. No treatments provided significant suppression of the mixed grub population. White grub development was delayed in Aug and Sep as a result of extreme drought conditions and below average rainfall. Second instar scarab grubs were present on the data collection date. The untreated checks on 6 Oct for each species contained second instars as follows: second instar JB grubs present, 29.0%; and second instar NMC grubs present, 13.0%. A later application in mid-Sep might have been more optimum, based on scarab grub development. No phytotoxicty was recorded and turf quality was equal across replicates."
