Abstract/Contents:"This study was undertaken to determine product effectiveness to control a mixed scarab white grub population on a golf course rough maintained in Mifflin County, PA. The turfgrass area consisted of rough bluegrass (60%), perennial ryegrass (20%), and weeds (20%). Treatment plots were 6 ^D#x 8 ft, arranged in a RCB and replicated three times. Liquid formulations were applied by using a CO2 sprayer with four 8002VS TeeJet nozzles mounted on a 6 ft boom, operating at 28 psi, and applied in 726 ml of water/48 ft2 or delivering 4.0 gal/1000 ft2. Treatments were applied in the early morning on 11 Aug under clear skies. At that time, air temp was 86°F with RH = 71%. Soil was dry with temp at 1 and 2 inch depth of 75 and 72°F, respectively. Thatch, 0.25 inch thick, was dry at that time and water pH was 7.0. The area was irrigated-in with 0.25 inch of water immediately after treatment. General soil conditions were as follows: soil textural class, sandy loam; soil particle size analysis: sand, 63.4%; silt, 30.4%; clay, 6.2%; soil percent water content (percent by wt), 9.1; organic matter, 2.9%; CEC, 9.7; and soil pH, 4.8. Three one ft2 soil samples were removed from each replicate on 13 Oct and the total number from all three samples of Japanese beetle (JB) and Northern masked chafer (NMC) grubs was recorded. Data was analyzed using Waller-Duncan k ratio (WD) and all three subsamples were combined because of low population number resulting in a 3 ft2 count. Minimal rainfall was recorded from 12 Jul through 13 Oct because of severe drought conditions. Although the golf course superintendent placed the research area on a twice weekly irrigation schedule, severe drought conditions and water use restrictions negatively impacted the development of all grub species. Data was analyzed using Waller-Duncan k ratio (WD; P ≤ 0.05). The area selected for the experiment had been infested with a natural population of JB grubs during the fall of 2004. Pretreatment counts recorded spring 2005 avg 12.2 JB third instar grubs/ft2. Adult NMC flight was monitored in 2005 in Centre County with a black light trap maintained at the Valentine Turfgrass Research Center. The first adult NMC was collected between on 24 Jun. Flight peaked between 2-8 Jul, and the last NMC adult was collected on 28 Jul. JB adults were observed flying late this season. Four treatments provided significant suppression of JB grubs which were present in low number as a result of drought conditions. Minimal NMC grubs were present including zero recovered from untreated check replicates; hence, no statistical difference was observed for NMC. Likewise JB populations were very low because of drought conditions. No phytotoxicty was recorded."
