Abstract/Contents:"This study was undertaken to determine the product effectiveness of one experimental and registered insecticide to suppress first generation annual bluegrass weevil (ABW) on a private golf course fairway adjacent to the rough in Bedford County, PA. The turfgrass area consisted of annual bluegrass (70%) and perennial ryegrass (30%). Treatment plots were 6 ^D#x 4 ft, arranged in a RCB design and replicated three times with a 1 ft barrier around all replicates. Liquid formulations were applied by using a CO2 sprayer with four 8002VS TeeJet nozzles mounted on a 6 ft boom, operating at 28 psi, and applied in 182 ml of water/24 ft2 or delivering 2.0 gal/1000 ft2. General soil conditions on site were: soil textural class, silty clay loam; soil particle size analysis: sand, 19.2%; silt, 50.7%; clay, 30.1%; soil percent water content (percent by wt), 26.8; organic matter, 7.3%; CEC, 14.3; and soil pH, 5.8. Treatments were applied under clear, sunny skies to moist soil and thatch on 9 May. Air temp was 81°F with RH = 22%. Soil temp at 1 and 2 inch depth was 60 and 52°F, respectively. Amount of thatch was 0.25 inch and water pH was 7.0. Immediately after application the experimental area was irrigated in with 0.1 inch of water. Two 4 inch cup cutter sod samples were removed from each replicate on 20 Jun. The total number of ABW pupae and larvae was recorded and converted to ft2. Data was analyzed using Waller-Duncan k ration (WD; P ≤ 0.05). The area selected for the experiment had been infested with a natural population of ABW during 2004 and 2005. All rates of DPX E2Y45 1.67SC and Talstar F provided significant suppression of ABW. No phytotoxicity was noted."
