Abstract/Contents:"This trial was conducted at Kingman Research Farm (UNH), Madbury, NH. Each treatment was replicated four times, in 49-ft2 plots, using a RCB design. All insecticidal treatments were aqueous, and all were applied to the plots on 2 Jun. The cut-ht of the grass was 2.25 inches. The grass was cut 24 h prior to treatment, and was mowed once a wk, or on an as needed basis thereafter. The treatments were applied using a 7-ft boom on a bicycle-type sprayer. The boom was equipped with four 8005 flat-fan pattern nozzles, fitted with 50-mesh screens. The materials were delivered by CO2 pressure, at 40 psi. The vol of insecticide and water was 2 gal/1000 ft2. All treatments were hand irrigated to approximately 0.25 inch; there was no precipitation within 24 h prior to or after applications. The soil type was as follows: texture, silt loam; sand, 34%; silt, 51%; clay, 15%; organic matter, 7.1%. Weather and soil conditions at time of applications was as follows: sky, clear; wind, less than 5 mph; air temp, 78°F; soil surface temp, 83°F; at 1-inch depth, 75°F; at 2-inch depth, 70°F; pH, 5.4; moisture, 33%. The plots were rated for live EC larvae on 24 Oct. A Ryan sod cutter, equipped with a 12-inch blade, was used to top cut along the middle, 2 inches deep, of each plot. The turf was then folded back to reveal the larvae. Data were subjected to ANOVA and means were separated using DMRT (P ≤ 0.05). Both rates of Merit 2SC and Arena 50WDG provided excellent control. Arena 50WDG provided the same degree of control as Merit 2SC at a lower rate. Mach 2 2SC performed poorly. No phytotoxicity was observed."
