Abstract/Contents:"An experimental compound under development by DuPont was applied to golf course rough turf (maintained at 2 to 3.5 inches) on 3 May or 25 May and sampled 5 Oct to determine the efficacy of the compound against European chafer (EC) larvae. The test was conducted at Stockbridge Golf Club, Stockbridge, MA. The conditions at the time of application on 3 May were as follows: air temp, 55° F; soil temp, 51° F; water pH, 5.9; light SW breeze, partly cloudy. The conditions at the time of application on 25 May were as follows: air temp, 48° F; soil temp, 51° F; steady NE wind, 10 mph; light rain. Soil conditions at the site were: soil pH 7.3, buffered pH 7.3; CEC 9.6 Meq/100g.. Treatment plots were 8 ^D#x 8 ft, replicated five times, and arranged in a CRB design. All sprayable formulations were applied with a watering can (3 qt water per plot). All granular formulations were applied using a jar with a perforated lid. Plots were irrigated with 0.2 inch of water within 1 h after application. Product efficacy was evaluated on 5 Oct by inspecting (on site) five 4.25-in diameter cores from near the center of each plot. Each core was recorded separately, and all counts were included in statistical analyses (Fisher's Protected LSD, P ≤ 0.05). The total grub population in untreated check plots was slightly below the commonly accepted threshold population (10 to 15 larvae per sq ft) at the time of sampling. All treatments reduced insect populations of both species significantly, including Meri 75WP, which was included as an industry standard. However, because the grub populations were relatively low at this site, further investigations of the persistence of both insecticides would be appropriate."
