Abstract/Contents:"The proportion of ecologically valuable turfs containing herbs and rich in different species increases constantly. Such turfs can be established either by changing old permanent pastures or turfs, or by sowing new seeds. In the process of management or utilization, all the measures end with an impoverishment of the soil of nutrients, in particular nitrogen and potash. When new turfs are established, plant species most suitable for the site in question should be selected. Demonstrated is the way in which the ecological key numbers can be applied. It is sometimes difficult to obtain seeds for turfs with a predomination of herbs. On principle, only native, perennial plant species should be sown. The mixtures sown so far contain a very high proportion of grasses and legumes which should be reduced in favor of the herbs. Sowing in two phases, viz. first herbs and a fortnight later grasses, helps to improve the competing qualities of the herbs. Clipping for cleaning purposes helps to reduce the growth of undesirable plants. In the following years one or two clippings suffice, the times of clipping depending on the composition of the plant populations. The cut grass must usually be removed."
