| Abstract/Contents: | "Responses of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) seedlings free of or infected with Acremonium coenophialum were determined when exposed to soil infested with Cochliobolus sativus. In a greenhouse pot experiment, germinated seeds of AU Triumph and Kentucky 31 (KY 31) tall fescue were covered with a soil mixture containing corncob grits infested with C. sativus. Emergence, establishment of seedlings, and growth of leaves and shoots were determined weekly for 6 wk. Emergence and growth of KY 31 seedlings were greater than for those of AU Triumph. Plant stand, height and shoot fresh weight were significantly reduced by C. sativus after 6 wk in plants free of or infected with A. coenophialum compared to noninoculated plants. There was no significant difference in growth parameters between plants free of or infected with A. coenophialum. The data support a neutral interaction between the endophyte and the pathogen." |
