Abstract/Contents:"Use of the diethanolamine salt of mefluidide [N-[2,4-dimethyl-5 [[(trifluromethyl) sulfonyl] amino] phenyl] acetamide)] as a growth regulator for improvement of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) forage quality was investigated. A May application of 0.3 kg/ha mefluidide inhibited normal floral development of tall fescue. Standing crop of tall fescue was reduced by mefluidide application in 1979 at both locations. The effect of mefluidide on total forage sugars was not consistent at either of two locations, but in one test had increased levels throughout the growing season. The predominant effect of mefluidide on tall fescue appeared to be a general increase in crude protein content 60 to 120 days (July to September) after treatments. Mefluidide may be an excellent tool for tall fescue management to provide improved forage quality and, consequently, increased animal production per unit area of land."
