Abstract/Contents:"Light utilization by agricultural plant communities is drawing increased attention. Donald suggested that in favorable environments light may control the total yield. Some studies strongly indicate that a definitive leaf area results in a particular light interception and is extremely important in regrowth and subsequent yield of a sward. From such efforts, and others, a concept of light as a maniputable factor of the environment has emerged. Much more must be known of the inter-relationship of leafage and light, particularly as affected by grazing or cutting management, before schemes to maximize dry-matter accumulation can be intelligently proposed. Watson placed the relationship of leaf surface to soil surface on a quantative basis and proposed the term leaf area index (LAI). Several workers have characterized the leafage of species as it affects light interception. Recently reduction of known factors to quantitative estimates of production has been attempted. It is evident that the first consideration in such studies is the reaction of the basic organ, the leaf, to the light environment. The purpose of this study was to describe the reaction of isolated leaf tissue to varying light intensity as compared to the total leafage of a plant community influence by intra- and inter-plant competition."
