Abstract/Contents:"Turfgrasses requiring reduced maintenance have been mandated by the public and the turfgrass industry. Some lower maintenance grasses used in the past fell by the wayside when grasses responding to cultural inputs proved superior at a time when fertilizers and pesticide use were not limiting concerns financially or environmentally. One grass undergoing revived interest is Colonial bentgrass, Agrostis tenuis, Sibth. This low-growing, fine-textured grass does not spread as vigorously as creeping bentgrass, but generally survives under lower fertility and watering. Few cultivars are currently commercially available. With support from the United States Golf Association and the University of Rhode Island, this project concentrates on developing Colonial bentgrasses initially for low maintenance or limited resource areas in maritime climates. Although Colonial bentgrass appears best suited for coastal areas in the Northeast and Northwest, expansion to interior climates will be explored. A primary focus involves improvement for brown patch (Rhizoctonia spp.) resistance. Planned screening efforts include laboratory, greenhouse, and field procedures."
