Abstract/Contents: | "Poa trivialis is a perennial cool season grass that is adapted to moist soils and a cool shaded environment. It can be found over a wide area of the United States, but until recently has not been extensively used as a turfgrass. An increasing market for P. trivialis seed has developed for use as a component in mixtures designed for winter overseeding warm season turfgrasses in the southern United States. Southern golf courses desiring a winter playing surface for putting greens and trees currently provide the largest part of this market. Before the development and release of the 'turf type' cultivar 'Sabre' in 1977 from the Rutgers turfgrass breeding program, no domestic cultivars were commercially available. Prior to Sabre this species was available as Danish common, with limited quantities of the Danish cultivar 'Polis' available for sale in the U.S. Turf performance of the European produced Danish common and Polis has been poor. In an effort to improve this species for turf use a Ph.D. study was initiated at Rutgers by R. H. Hurley under the direction of C. R. Funk. From 1979 to 1981 over 270 P. trivialis plants were collected from old turfs in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York and California. Following clonal evaluation, selected plants were crossed in various mating schemes. Progenies were subsequently subjected to five cycles of recurrent restricted phenotypic selection for attractive turf type growth, a bright dark green leaf color, upright growth during reproductive development, uniform flowering maturity and freedom from disease. The cultivar 'Laser' was commercially released in 1988. After the release of 'Laser' an ongoing recurrent selection program has continued with plans to commercially release within two years two new improved cultivars displaying a darker green color, attractive turf quantities with improved disease resistance. Presently, the use of P. trivialis for winter overseeding dormant warm season turfs is extremely popular and has proven to be successful. Commercial seed production of this species has increased significantly over the past five years with demand for seed exceeding present supply." |
