Abstract/Contents:Discusses the history and potential uses of DDT, stating that "research...revealed heaps of evidence that refute most of the claims regarding the hazards of DDT." Suggests that the environmental movement "is obsessed with preserving [the] world with anti-modernist and anti-technology thinking." States that "things were not better before DDT. Chemical insect controls were quite crude, unsafe to use, phytotoxic, frequently ineffective, and often had to be concocted by the turf manager." Provides the "reasons for the...success of DDT": "the rate of application of DDT was considerably lower than 'lead arsenate'"; "'lead arsenate' provided no control on the chinch bug, whereas DDT did"; "during both world wars, the future availability of 'lead arsenate' was uncertain, and alternatives were actively being sought"; and "beginning in 1935, experimental field plots were started in several U.S. [United States] states with 'Milky White Disease' for the control of Japanese beetle grubs...it was...forgotten when it was realized that DDT controlled a wider range of insect pests." Describes the potential effects of DDT on birds and states that "in spite of claims by environmental activists, that DDT was responsible for the deaths of thousands of bald eagles in the 1960s and 1970s, biologists who analyzed dead eagles during this period found no adverse effects caused by DDT."
