Abstract/Contents:Details the history of artificial turf, stating that it has "gained widespread use as an alternative to grass sports surfaces." Mentions potential advantages to artificial turf, stating that "it has the advantage of being cheaper and easier to maintain by eliminating the need for irrigation, water, and fertiliser [fertilizer]." Explains that "history has it that the birth of artificial grass began through attempts by scientists trying to develop a type of grass that would not only allow children and adolescents to play on regardless of the weather...In the early 1960's, the Ford Foundation, as part of its mission to advance human achievement, asked science and industry to develop synthetic playing surfaces for use within urban spaces." Describes early synthetic grass fields, stating that they "were not only hard under foot and made for impracticality especially where sports and children were concerned given the tendencies to fall but were very unpopular." States that "advances in artificial grass surfaces are enormous and can't be downplayed. It is common practice to no longer use asphalt as an underlay between the surface of the grass which has increased the shock absorption provided by the grass, decreased the retention of heat during summer and further improved the drainage ability of the grass during the wetter months." Lists the three types of artificial sports surfaces: nylon knitted turf, filled turf, and portable turf."
