Abstract/Contents:Discusses crabgrass preventers, suggesting that "the unpredictable results with the herbicides are...due to the...weather: wet springs and extended dry spells in early summer." Explains that "crabgrass seed does not all germinate at the same time. As long as soil temperatures are high enough and the seeds are exposed to enough light, they will continue to germinate." States that "moisture is needed to activate the [herbicide] materials, but wet weather throughout the spring will leach away the chemicals. Conversely, a lack of moisture following application will not activate the chemicals, and weeks of dry weather will lead to loss through volatilization and photodegradation." Suggests to "be sure to check the label of the material [one is] applying for the maximum rate, and the number of times the material can be applied per season."
