Abstract/Contents:Explains the design concept Douglas County Regional Parks in Colorado utilized in planning a large, mixed-use park while keeping costs and consumption down. States that "instead of [a] park design where all areas are irrigated bluegrass turf...the county developed a template of four turf alternatives, a mixture of hard and soft surfaced areas and ornamental grasses." Reports that these changes have "reduced the amount of irrigation consumption by 50 to 60 percent and reduced the maintenance cost by 30 to 40 percent." States that "synthetic turf accounts for approximately 20% of the turfed area of the park." Explains that in areas of high visibility but low pedestrain traffic, a blend of six species of grass called Douglas County Low-Growth Mix is used, covering about 15 percent of the park and a blend of 11 species called Douglas County Permanent Drill Seeding Mix is used in the remaining 25 percent of the park in areas of relative invisibility to the public.
