Abstract/Contents:Discusses organic fertilizer, explaining that "most turf professionals divide fertilizer into two types, synthetic and organic. However, when looking at their source elements all fertilizers can be divided into two different categories, urea based and protein based." Explains that "the most popular fertilizer worldwide was, and still is, composted animal manure or sludge. These composts contain organically derived urea. States that "as manure and sludge based products decompose and release nutrients they reduce in volume by about 90%. This means they leave behind roughly 10% of their weight as a deposit of inert organic material. This inert material, or ash, provides no benefit to plants but if worked into a clay soil can, over time, serve to soften the clay." Highlights protein based fertilizers, explaining that "protein based fertilizers, derived primarily from plant and animal meals and have an almost insignificant ammoniac component, are typically slow to release nutrients, and are not water-soluable." Mentions that, " becasue decomposition is a function of soil temperature and moisture, which are the parameters that affect plant growth, the release characteristics more closely track the actual nutrient needs of the turf plants.
