Abstract/Contents: | "Marathon Sport Spring® is a novel, granular organo-mineral NPK fertilizer for turf grass culture, based on thermically-treated poultry manure with additions of (NH4)2SO4, urea, and other mineral nutrients, to provide a readily plant-available, as well as a long-release component of nitrogen (N) supply with preferential release of ammonium-(NH4+)-N. Expected advantages comprise reduced N leaching, darker green appearance of the lawn and smooth leaf growth as a response to preferential NH4+-nutrition, as well as improved nutrient acquisition by NH4+-induced stimulation of root growth and rhizosphere acidification. Using a standard substrate for turfgrass culture, N release and nitrification characteristics were investigated at two different soil temperatures. A greenhouse experiment was conducted in a rhizotron system with controlled root-zone temperature and root observation windows, to study the impact on root growth and rhizosphere chemistry, using Lolium perenne as a model plant. In a parallel field experiment, long-term effects on different grass species were investigated over a culture period of two years. Commercially available slow-release fertilizers and mineral N fertilizer treatments were investigated for comparison." |
