Abstract/Contents:Discusses training staff in athletic field or grounds maintenance programs, stating that "training is a key element in equipping all of the individuals on the staff to perform at the top of their game and keep them functioning as a team." Recommends that training at the beginning of employment be less formal, starting with basic assignments and progressing one step at a time. Suggests conducting a start-up session to explain basic policies, overview services and standards, and explain expectations for employee appearance. Recommends preparing for success by setting the tone for effective interaction, cross training for flexibility, and utilizing staff members' expertise for "one-on-one staff training, giving the individual the opportunity to train another staff member." Suggests that "consistency throughout the organization is especially important in training." Also suggests that "tailgate talks provide a weekly format for snippets of training focused on whatever comes up that needs to be addressed." States that "communication between manager and supervisor, supervisor and staff and staff and staff all play important roles in achieving goals." Recommends managers "develop programs to acknowledge and reward good work" and "include regular evaluation as part of the program...so staff members have a way to measure their performance."
