Abstract/Contents:Discusses issues facing golf course staff regarding the cost of maintenance, as they encounter "the rising cost of products and services and increased expectations from golfers." Suggests that superintendents can raise course revenues by "embracing programs to grow the game of golf and participation while continuing to address cost saving opportunities, managing labor and improving conditions for play." States that "golfer expectations can place GCSAA [Golf Course Superintendent Association of America] members in a precarious position as they balance the wishes of customers against the restrictions placed by budgetary, agronomic and legislative and regulatory limits." Also States that "there will always be labor shortages at some properties but innovative superintendents who are skilled at attracting and hiring employees, training appropriately, scheduling for success and ultimately retaining the high performers will thrive." Explains that "in addition to the obvious environmental and cost savings advantages, [water conservation] provides for healthier turf, less weed pressure and firmer, more enjoyable playing conditions." Concludes that "tighter environmental regulations will put pressure on chemical and pesticide companies to develop products that are environmentally friendly and to devise effective pest control solutions."
