Abstract/Contents:Presents research conducted at Michigan State University to study "Merion bluegrass in mixtures with redtop, ryegrass, and red fescue at two cutting heights and at two nitrogen levels, both in the greenhouse and in the field." Reports that "high nitrogen produced the more dense Merion sod but reduced the amount of roots and rhizomes. Low nitrogen produced less top but more roots and rhizomes." Also reports that "there seemed to be no advantage in using either redtop or ryegrass with Merion, for the best turf was produced by Merion alone." Suggests that "for combinations of cool-season grasses with Zoysia, common Z. japonica might be superior to Meyer because its more open turf might permit over-seeding with cool-season grasses."
